A DXA scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is a medical-grade imaging test that measures:

  • Body fat

  • Lean muscle mass

  • Visceral adipose tissue (VAT)

  • Bone mineral density (BMD)

  • Bone mineral content (BMC)

It’s the gold standard used in hospitals, research labs, and performance centers and now available in a private, performance-focused setting here at Silicon Valley DXA.

DXA scans are more accurate than other methods like bioelectrical impedance or calipers. DXA scans measure body composition directly, rather than estimating it, and provide precise breakdowns of fat, lean mass, and bone density in specific areas of the body.

Compared to bioimpedance devices and consumer scales, DXA provides:

  • Regional muscle analysis (arms, legs, trunk)

  • Visceral fat measurement

  • Bone Density and Bone Mineral Content

  • Accurate lean mass breakdown

  • Clear asymmetry & imbalance identification

  • Error margins significantly smaller than BIA device

Yes, DXA scans are safe for most people and use very low levels of radiation. However, certain populations, such as pregnant women, should avoid the scan. Our technicians will assist in determining if a DXA scan is appropriate for you. The procedure is non-invasive, quick, and comfortable.

During the scan, you will lie still on a table for approximately 10-15 minutes while the DXA machine scans your body. The process is painless, and you’ll receive your results within 30 minutes of the scan and have the opportunity to discuss your results with a technician.Accordion Content

No special preparation is required for a DXA scan, but we recommend avoiding heavy exercise or large meals for at least 4 hours beforehand. To ensure accurate results when retesting, it’s helpful to keep as many variables the same as possible between scans (e.g., time of day, fasting vs. non-fasting).  We also also that you wear comfortable, light clothing without metal and remove all jewelry.

For most clients, we recommend getting a DXA scan every 3-6 months to track progress. However, the frequency may vary based on individual health goals and recommendations from your healthcare provider or technician.

Yes — that’s one of its biggest strengths.

DXA provides:

  • Consistent measurement

  • Clear before/after comparisons

  • True changes in lean mass

  • True changes in body fat (including visceral fat)

  • Bone density trends over the years

It’s ideal for:

  • Athletes

  • Lifters

  • People losing weight (with or without the use of a GLP-1)

  • Menopause/midlife health

  • Longevity-focused adults

Visceral fat is the fat stored around internal organs — not the fat you can see or pinch.

High visceral fat increases risk for:

  • Metabolic disease

  • Cardiovascular disease

  • Hormonal disruption

  • Inflammation

It is an important health marker and DXA is the most accurate tool available to measure it.
